The 2014 Northern Community Clean-up was a huge success!

Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba (MMSM) together with the Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association (CBCRA) and its Recycle Everywhere program, are pleased to announce that Cormorant is the winner of the first place prize! Cormorant will be receiving up to $5,000 to put towards a recycling initiative within their community. MMSM and Recycle Everywhere will also be hosting a celebratory BBQ in Cormorant to congratulate them on their efforts.

The Northern Community Clean-up is now in its fourth year. This initiative was developed to increase recycling awareness and combat litter after a long winter in Northern Manitoba. Each community was provided with supplies including a Recycle Everywhere bin, participant t-shirts, gloves, bags to collect waste and recycling and a scale to weigh the material. Local volunteers were recruited and helped pick up garbage and recycling on the streets of their neighborhood.

This year there were 17 participating communities and over 1.3 tons of recyclable material was collected. Material was weighed and transported to the closest MRF to be processed.

We thank all participating communities for their hard work and passion for their community! Community clean-up days are vital in increasing local pride and community spirit.
