We’ve partnered with the City of Brandon on a new project – the 4R Waste Ambassador Program! This new initiative is a three-year pilot project aimed at diverting more waste from landfill. The program is actively recruiting volunteer ambassadors. If you are passionate about the 4R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rethink – this opportunity is for you!
Volunteer ambassadors will receive training and resources from the city. Upon completion, ambassadors are encouraged to seek out opportunities where they can educate members of the community about recycling and waste diversion. This can include virtual events, school and group functions (following COVID-19 health protocols.) Together, the City of Brandon is looking to better educate residents on “what goes in the bin” in order to improve waste, recycling, and organic diversion rates in the community and to increase efficiencies at the Eastview Landfill.
City of Brandon Environmental Initiative Coordinator, Lindsay Hargreaves, says the success of the program will depend on the dedication and enthusiasm of the volunteer ambassadors and cooperation from the community.
“We really see this as an opportunity for the entire community to embrace the 4R’s and to help educate our community on the many actions they can take which will collectively help the City of Brandon increase its waste diversion rates,” says Hargreaves. “The 4R Waste Ambassador Program will empower participants to educate their neighbours, classmates, church community, service groups and peers on the benefits that the 4R’s can have locally and globally!”
Ambassadors are required to contribute at least 30 hours of their time to the program annually. Volunteers of all ages are needed for this program. However, if an ambassador is under the age of 18, they will need a parent or guardian to accompany them while out volunteering.
“We were excited when the City of Brandon approached us with this great opportunity to connect with the community on the benefits of the 4R’s,” said Karen Melnychuk, Executive Director, MMSM.
“Education has always remained a priority for our organization and we hope that the program inspires residents to make a conscious effort to look at the impact they have on the environment.”
