November 2016

This fall, 137 schools across Manitoba participated in the MMSM Bag Up Manitoba program, keeping 1,106,723 plastic bags out of the landfills.

“Since 2008, over eight million bags have been kept from the landfills due to this program,” said Tom Ethans, Take Pride Winnipeg! Inc Executive Director. “We encourage everyone to learn more about recycling and plastic bag reduction and discover how they can make the earth a better place.”

The students at Ecole Noel-Ritchot learned of their honor at a ceremony at the school on November 24, receiving a plastic composite bench for their participation. The bags collected will be baled and shipped to Trex for recycling into composite decking material and other products. Participating schools will receive herb garden boxes created from recycled plastic and wood composite material. In addition, a total of 14 benches will be awarded between urban and rural schools via random draw.

“MMSM is very proud of all the participating schools who have come together to help keep plastic bags out of our landfills,” said Karen Melnychuk, MMSM Executive Director. “We are committed to supporting the reduction, reuse and recycling of plastic bags and will continue to do so for years to come”.
